Iran's Potential Acquisition of Chinese CM-302 Supersonic Missiles: A Regional Power Shift

Іран може укріпити свої оборонні можливості, отримавши доступ до новітніх китайських надзвукових ракет, що вплине на баланс сил у регіоні.

Iran and China Near Major Arms Deal

Iran is on the verge of finalizing a significant agreement with China to purchase CM-302 supersonic anti-ship missiles. Negotiations, ongoing for at least two years, have intensified following the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran in June 2023. This potential deal represents one of the most substantial Chinese arms transfers to Iran in decades. While a delivery date remains unspecified, regional analysts warn it could dramatically alter the military balance in the strategically vital Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

Capabilities of the CM-302 Missile

The CM-302 missiles have a range of approximately 290 km and are designed to penetrate advanced naval air defense systems. The seriousness of Iran's intent is underscored by visits from high-ranking Iranian defense officials, including Deputy Defense Minister Masoud Oraeiy, to China for final talks. In a contrasting statement, China's Foreign Ministry has claimed no knowledge of any such potential agreement.

Amid these developments, the U.S. has moved the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike groups closer to the region. Combined, these groups can deploy over 150 aircraft and roughly 5,000 military personnel. Western intelligence agencies have also reported intercepting increased communications from pro-Iranian groups and movements.

“This completely changes the game rules if Iran obtains supersonic capabilities for attacking ships in the area. These missiles are very difficult to intercept.” — Danny Citrinowicz, former Israeli intelligence officer

U.S. commentary has highlighted the gravity of the situation. President Donald Trump emphasized: 'Either we make a deal, or we’ll have to do something very severe, like last time.' Consequently, the prospective Iran-China missile deal carries profound implications for regional security and political stability, potentially triggering a new arms race.

The finalization of the CM-302 missile purchase would mark a major step in enhancing Tehran's military power, a development causing significant concern among Western nations, particularly the United States and Israel. Given the concurrent U.S. military buildup in the region, the situation risks escalating tensions, demanding careful attention from international actors to prevent potential conflict.
