Iran National Football Team Set to Compete in the 2026 World Cup
Iran’s national football team will take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The confirmation came from Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who stated that the decision was reached after evaluations by the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the country’s football federation.
Just two days prior to this announcement, representatives from Iran’s football federation met with FIFA officials in Turkey. On May 17, 2026, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström described the meeting as productive, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to ensuring tournament regulations are upheld. Baghaei added:
“We received assurances that FIFA will do everything in its power to make sure the host nations comply with FIFA’s rules.”
Group Stage and Qualification Results
Iran has been drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. All three of their group-stage matches will take place within the United States. The World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with games also held in Mexico and Canada. Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, will advance to the Round of 16.
In the context of World Cup qualifying, Ukraine failed to progress after losing 3–1 to Sweden in the semifinal of the 2026 playoff round. In that match, Ukraine’s Ponomarenko scored in the 90+1 minute, while Sweden’s Viktor Gyökeres netted a hat trick with goals in the 6th, 51st, and 72nd minutes.
Iran’s participation in the World Cup marks a significant milestone not only for the nation but also for the global football community. This tournament offers a major platform to showcase Iran’s football achievements on the international stage. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s elimination highlights the intense competition within European football and the steep challenges teams face in qualifying for the World Cup.
