Iran: Protests Over Rial Collapse and Inflation Escalate into Clashes with Security Forces

Протестувальники в Ірані виступають проти економічної кризи та зростання цін, що призводить до зіткнень із силами безпеки.

Protests in Iran 2026

The protests in Iran, which began in late 2025, escalated into clashes with security forces in early 2026 due to an economic crisis, namely the collapse of the Iranian rial and high inflation. On the first day of 2026, fierce clashes occurred between demonstrators and security forces, marking the most serious unrest in Iran since the protests of 2022.

Economic Situation and Consequences of Protests

The economic situation in Iran continues to deteriorate: inflation has exceeded 40%, and food prices have risen by more than 60%. At the same time, the rial has fallen to a record level of 1.42 million per dollar, while in 2022 the exchange rate was 430 thousand rials per dollar. Such crisis phenomena have provoked massive citizen protests demanding improvement in the economic situation.

In the city of Lordegan, at least two deaths have been reported due to the clashes. Protesters set fire to buildings and bases of the paramilitary Basij formation. These events reflect the growing discontent of the population and the alarming socio-economic situation in Iran.

"The situation in Iran indicates deep economic problems that have already led to mass protests."

Citizens demand not only stabilization of the economy but also greater control over inflation and prices for essential goods. In the context of increasing social tension, the government will find it difficult to restore public trust and find ways to address these crisis phenomena.
