Iran's Support for Russia and Ukraine's Response
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgii Tykhyi stated that Iran has for years backed Russia by supplying it with drones and military technology for the war against Ukraine. In response to threats from Iranian officials, Ukraine has dispatched professional teams to the Middle East to counter Iranian drones.
Ukraine's Middle Eastern Strategy
Iranian officials, including Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, have invoked Article 51 of the UN Charter concerning the right to self-defense. Azizi claimed that the involvement of Ukrainian specialists in countering Iranian drones in the Middle East makes Ukraine a legitimate target for attacks.
As part of its strategy, Ukraine has sent three expert teams to operate in the following Middle Eastern countries:
- Qatar
- United Arab Emirates
- Saudi Arabia
- Jordan
Reports indicate that over 10 countries have already requested Ukraine's assistance in defending against 'Shahed' drones. This outreach highlights how Ukraine's battlefield experience has become a strategic asset in international security cooperation.
“The Iranian regime has for years been complicit in the killing of Ukrainians by providing the aggressor state with drones and technology for the war against Ukraine.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy added, “Today, due to this war and these massive attacks, Ukraine possesses the world's greatest expertise in countering 'Shahed' drones.” He emphasized that successful defense requires not only interceptor systems but also the practical experience in their use, which Ukrainian soldiers have gained.
The situation in the Middle East and the involvement of Ukrainian specialists in counter-drone operations is intensifying, driven by Iran's prolonged support for Russia's war. This dynamic could significantly impact the region's geopolitical landscape, as cooperation between Ukrainian experts and Middle Eastern partners may enhance security for all involved. However, threats from Iran risk further escalating regional tensions.
