Chinese Missile Downed U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle Over Iran, Sources Say

Китайська ракета збила американський винищувач F-15E над територією Ірану, повідомляють джерела.

Inside the Downing of an F-15E Over Iran

Iran likely used a Chinese-supplied surface-to-air missile to shoot down an American F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet—marking the first time in decades that a U.S. combat aircraft has been brought down by enemy fire. The incident occurred in April over southwestern Iran. Both crew members—a pilot and a weapons systems officer—successfully ejected. The pilot was rescued within seven hours, while the weapons officer spent two days hiding in the Zagros mountain foothills before being recovered.

China’s Role and the Fallout

Beijing may have provided Tehran with a long-range early warning radar system known as the YLC-8B. U.S. intelligence had detected Chinese preparations to deliver new air defense systems to Iran. However, investigators have not determined whether the missile that struck the F-15E was a recent transfer or came from older stockpiles. The Trump administration brokered a ceasefire with Iran just before President Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. During a visit to China, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that

“Washington is not asking Beijing for help on this matter.”

Following the incident, President Trump confirmed the jet was downed by a surface-to-air missile but later stated,

“I believe Xi Jinping’s assurances that no military supplies are going to Tehran.”
China’s embassy in the U.S. denied any weapons transfers. American officials noted that Chinese support has not had a decisive operational impact on the battlefield. In response, Washington imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies for providing Iran with satellite access.

Iranian media released photos and videos showing wreckage from the downed jet, including fragments of the ejection seat. Analysis of the debris confirmed that the aircraft was a U.S. F-15 fighter. U.S. special operations teams located and rescued one crew member, while the search for the other pilot continues. Iran has offered a reward for information leading to the capture of the remaining crew.

This event highlights the growing friction between the U.S. and Iran, as well as China’s potential role as a military technology supplier to Tehran. The downing of the F-15E could have serious implications for regional security and great-power relations, raising questions about new military alliances and the kind of support nations may provide each other in conflict zones. The U.S. has already taken retaliatory measures, signaling the gravity of the situation and the risk of further escalation.
