Life in Iceland: High Salaries Come with Even Higher Costs

Iceland has officially been named the priciest nation on the planet. In an interview with the outlet Interia, Polish national Agnieszka Jastrzębek shared the challenges of living there, particularly for immigrants. She moved to Iceland 12 years ago through the Erasmus program, where she met her Icelandic husband. Her first visit took place in January, and she was struck not only by the crisp air but also by the darkness that lasted until 11:30 a.m.

When I first arrived in Iceland, it was winter, in January. What amazed me most were the fresh air and the darkness that stretched until 11:30 a.m. I could sleep soundly even until 10 a.m.! - Agnieszka Jastrzębek

Working at a local café helped Agnieszka adjust to her new life. She explained that in Iceland, daily life in the northern part of the country heavily depends on the weather:

  • Plans can fall through due to blizzards or closed roads.

Agnieszka also pointed out that while wages are high in Iceland, living expenses are even steeper:

The average family struggles to save anything for a rainy day, and living on credit via a credit card surprises no one there. - Agnieszka Jastrzębek

Additionally, she highlighted serious issues within the healthcare system:

  • Healthcare facilities are in a deplorable state.
  • There is a shortage of specialist doctors.
  • Private healthcare is virtually nonexistent.

This raises concerns among the population, especially those planning to emigrate to Iceland. Agnieszka also noted that the feeling of isolation can be overwhelming:

Just the realization that we are separated from other places by several hours of flight can be depressing. - Agnieszka Jastrzębek

Thus, despite high salaries, life in Iceland presents serious challenges, particularly for immigrants facing high living costs and healthcare system problems. With the high cost of living and limited opportunities for savings, the situation can be tough for those considering a move to this Nordic nation. These factors may influence the decisions of potential migrants eyeing Iceland as a new home.

As Iceland takes the lead in global living costs, it’s worth examining how this compares to other high-expense nations. For instance, Switzerland, once the priciest country, now faces a shift in its economic standing. Understanding the nuances of these changes can provide valuable insights for those considering a move to Iceland or similar locales.
