Spain to Provide Ukraine with Patriot Missiles: Details of the New Aid Package

Іспанія надасть Україні системи ППО: нові подробиці про військову допомогу

Patriot Missiles for Ukraine

During President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Madrid, Spain pledged to send Ukraine five missiles for the Patriot air defense system. The missiles are PAC-2 variants, currently in service with a Spanish Army anti-aircraft artillery regiment based in Marines, Valencia. Each missile is valued between $3 and $4 million, bringing the total estimated value of this package to around 15 million euros.

Furthermore, Spain's Ministry of Defense is implementing a program to upgrade its missiles to the newer PAC-3 standard. However, the delivery of four new Patriot 3+ configuration batteries for Spain itself has been postponed until 2031, with that order costing nearly 1.5 billion euros. The primary manufacturer of the Patriot system is the American company Raytheon. This commitment comes as Ukraine urgently seeks to bolster its air defenses against frequent missile and drone attacks.

International Backing for Ukraine

In a related move to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses, the United Kingdom's government announced an urgent allocation of 115 million euros for this purpose. These actions demonstrate the ongoing international support for Ukraine's efforts to enhance its security and defensive capabilities in the face of current threats.

The provision of Patriot missiles and the UK's financial assistance underscore the growing international backing for Ukraine in its struggle for security and stability.

These steps form part of a broader strategy to counter external threats arising from the conflict in the region. Strengthening air defense is critically important for ensuring national security and protecting the civilian population.

In addition to Spain's recent commitment, Germany and its NATO allies are also playing a crucial role in assembling a comprehensive Patriot missile package for Ukraine. This collective effort highlights the unified international response aimed at enhancing Ukraine's air defense capabilities amidst ongoing threats, further emphasizing the importance of global support in this critical situation.
