Spain Leads the World in Beach Quality
For the second consecutive year, Spain has secured the top spot in the global ranking for beaches awarded the prestigious Blue Flag eco-label. The number of certified beaches in the country has climbed to 676, highlighting Spain's ongoing dedication to maintaining strict environmental standards. One of the most famous beaches to receive this honor is Burriana Beach, located in the town of Nerja in the Andalusia region.

Greece ranks second, with the highest concentration of certified beaches found on Crete (154) and the Halkidiki peninsula (93). Notably, Campudi Beach near Ouranoupoli in northern Greece stands out for holding three Blue Flag distinctions simultaneously. Turkey takes third place, with most of its certified beaches located in the Antalya province. It is worth noting that Turkey plans to add new public beaches with free admission to its list in 2026.
Other countries in the top ten include:
- Italy with 525 beaches
- Portugal with 396 beaches
- France with 387 beaches
- Denmark with 140 beaches
- Mexico with 103 beaches
- Ireland with 85 beaches
- Croatia with 78 beaches
Mexico is the only non-European country to make the list. To earn a Blue Flag, each beach must meet 33 criteria across six categories. As noted by Conde Nast Traveler:
“For travelers, this award means they are visiting a place where they can expect stunning beauty, a commitment to sustainability, high-quality infrastructure, and environmental education for visitors.”
Spain’s continued leadership underscores its efforts to uphold environmental standards, making it an attractive destination for tourists who value cleanliness and quality. The Blue Flag certification is becoming a key factor in choosing vacation spots, as it not only signals ecological responsibility but also ensures comfortable conditions for visitors. In the context of a global environmental crisis, such an initiative could serve as a model for other countries aiming to improve their beaches and attract tourists.
