In Mallorca, a real battle is unfolding between local residents and the masses of tourists. To scare off unwanted guests, the islanders decided to use interesting and unconventional methods. For example, they post fake recommendations about 'secret' beaches that turn out to be residential areas and other infrastructure facilities. In real locations, they install signs with frightening messages about poisonous jellyfish or the danger of rockfalls. They even spread videos online about crocodiles in local water bodies to frighten unwanted guests.
Introducing restrictions on access to popular tourist spots and taking inspiration from the Italian example may change the situation. Environmental and social tensions are gradually leading to the need for reforming mass tourism in Mallorca.
