From Cairo to Ukraine: A Love Story That Transcends Borders
The journey of Polina and Omar, a young couple from different countries, began in Egypt and highlights their efforts to start a family despite contemporary challenges. Polina, originally from Ukraine, traveled to Egypt for work, where she met Omar, a native of Cairo. Their connection sparked instantly in a café, leading to their marriage in Cairo in May 2023. Their wedding was a civil ceremony without religious rites, reflecting their international backgrounds.
Facing Their First Winter in Ukraine
Omar arrived in Ukraine for the first time in January 2026. Together with Polina, he applied for immigration permission at the Horishni Plavni branch of the State Migration Service in Poltava region. Omar initially expected the process to be complicated but found it surprisingly straightforward. "The key is to have all the necessary documents, and that wasn’t an issue," he shared.
Omar’s impressions of Ukraine and its people are overwhelmingly positive. "Even when someone doesn’t speak Arabic or English, people stop to offer help," he noted, praising the warmth and kindness of Ukrainians. Yet, the reality of living in a conflict zone became clear when a nearby explosion shook their neighborhood. "Unfortunately, I experienced firsthand how terrifying it is when life can be cut short at any moment. It’s horrifying," Omar recalled.
Despite the hardships, Omar admires the resilience of Ukrainians. "I used to think life would come to a halt during the war, but Ukraine is different. People keep working, living fully, and planning for the future," he said. Over time, Omar has begun to feel a strong connection with Ukraine and eagerly looks forward to returning to Egypt to share his experiences. "I will tell everyone back home how wonderful Ukraine is," he concluded.
An important part of their family life includes their two Maltese dogs, Lucy and Leo, who are constant companions. Polina and Omar also run a blog where they showcase fascinating places around the world, enabling them to share their adventures and cultural insights. Their story exemplifies how love can bridge cultural divides even during the most difficult times.
This narrative highlights the significance of cross-cultural relationships in today’s globalized world, where love and mutual support help overcome adversity. Omar’s experience illustrates that despite the ongoing war, life in Ukraine endures, and people find ways to adapt and build hopeful futures. Stories like theirs inspire and strengthen international bonds during global crises.
