Russian neutral speed skater failed to perform in the USA after a meeting with Putin

Російський ковзаняр не зміг показати очікуваний результат в США після зустрічі з Путіним.

Russian speed skater Aleksandra Saitina participated in the World Cup stage in the USA. She is recognized as a neutral athlete by the International Skating Union (ISU). During her performance, Saitina fell and was unable to finish, failing to earn any points in the ranking that allows qualification for the Olympics.

Saitina's participation in the annual address of Russian President Putin to the Federal Assembly also sparked discussions. On February 29, 2024, Saitina attended the event alongside other supporters of Putin, including Russian skier Veronika Stepanova.

Participation in propaganda events violates the IOC's recommendations regarding neutral athletes. Despite this, Saitina received visas to attend two stages of the World Cup, where ranking points for Olympic participation are at stake. Among the locations where the competitions will take place are Calgary in Canada, Heerenveen in the Netherlands, and Hamar in Norway.

The Olympics 2026 will be held from February 6 to 22 in Italy.
