Analysts have examined the Kremlin's demands regarding a veto right on security guarantees for Ukraine. According to a new report from the Institute for the Study of War, Moscow wants the ability to block any security measures for Ukraine.

The Kremlin demands a veto right over any security measures for Ukraine and is likely seeking such guarantees to be based on the option proposed by Moscow during negotiations in Istanbul in the spring of 2022.

Russia believes that any security guarantees for Ukraine must take Moscow's interests into account and excludes the possibility of discussing such issues without Russia's participation. This could weaken Ukraine's defense capability and hinder support from Western partners.

Kremlin demands and consequences for Ukraine

The Kremlin is trying to impose its security demands on the efforts of the US, Europe, and Ukraine itself. Russia wants to have a veto on Western military assistance for Ukraine and leave the country defenseless against a potential Russian invasion.

'If Russia is granted a veto over Western security guarantees, it would allow the Kremlin to dictate terms that would weaken Ukraine's ability to withstand another Russian invasion,' experts emphasized.

Moreover, Russia will not agree to the military presence of NATO member countries in Ukraine as part of security guarantees. This puts Ukraine at risk and limits its defensive capabilities.

The report shows that Russia is trying to gain control over security guarantees for Ukraine and aims to impose its conditions on the Western world regarding the situation surrounding the conflict in eastern Ukraine. This may affect the country's defense capability and stability in the region.
