Italy's Proposed Military Personnel Increase
The Italian Ministry of Defence is considering a major reform to expand its military personnel from the current level of approximately 170,000 to 275,000 by the year 2044. This proposal, which includes integrating around 15,000 reservists into the total force count, represents a significant long-term commitment to strengthening national defence. This planned expansion comes as European nations reassess their security postures in a changing global landscape.
Implementing this military growth is estimated to cost the state roughly €6 billion. Consequently, annual personnel expenditures could rise from €8.8 billion to nearly €15 billion. The increase is designed to be phased in gradually until 2044, allowing time to secure the necessary funding, resources, and training for new recruits.
Internal Politics and Cooperation with Ukraine
Military experts prepared the proposal and presented it to Italy's Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto. The armed forces reform plan could be made public by the end of March this year. However, the document is preliminary and requires political alignment; its implementation will ultimately need approval from the Italian parliament.
Amidst these domestic developments, Ukraine's Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Rustem Umerov, held talks with Minister Crosetto. Their discussion focused on key areas of support:
- the supply of air defence systems to Ukraine
- assistance for Ukraine in restoring its energy sector
These topics underscore the ongoing strategic partnership between Italy and Ukraine during the ongoing conflict.
The planned military buildup signals Italy's intent to bolster its defence capabilities against a backdrop of increasing geopolitical instability. The higher defence spending could also influence domestic politics, as it will require sustained parliamentary and public backing.
