Italian Military Deployment to Romania
In response to a Russian 'Shahed' drone incident late on May 29, the Italian government has decided to send a military contingent and aircraft to Romania. The drone violated NATO airspace and struck an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galati, injuring a woman and her 14-year-old child. The Italian mission will focus on training Romanian forces and is scheduled to run for about a month, starting June 15.
Mission Details
Italy will deploy roughly 100 soldiers along with a squadron of multirole fighter jets to Romania. The primary base of operations will be the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base near the city of Constanța. The mission’s objective is to conduct intensive training for Romanian military personnel, particularly in detecting, tracking, and neutralizing small aerial targets such as Russian kamikaze drones.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that
“this was an attack on an ally and a European Union member,”emphasizing that
“she stands with the Romanian people.”Romanian authorities described the incident as a 'serious and irresponsible escalation.' The training aims to bolster regional security, especially given Galati’s proximity—roughly 20 kilometers—to the Ukrainian border.
