Ukraine to Host Initial Field Tests of Italy's Michelangelo Air Defense System This Year

В Україні розпочнуться перші польові випробування системи ППО Мікеланджело від Італії цього року.

Michelangelo System Testing in Ukraine

The Italian defense firm Leonardo has announced plans to conduct the first field trials of its new Michelangelo air defense system in Ukraine before the end of this year. Company CEO Roberto Cingolani stated the tests will occur in a real-world operational environment to properly evaluate the system's effectiveness. Full delivery of the Michelangelo system is scheduled for the end of 2026. This testing phase is significant as it will provide crucial performance data under active threat conditions.

The Michelangelo system boasts several key features that position it as a vital component of modern layered defense. Its core element is the MC5 module, designed to protect an area with a radius of approximately 10 to 15 kilometers. Its capabilities include:

  • tracking and intercepting ballistic and hypersonic missiles;
  • countering massed saturation attacks;
  • destroying low-flying targets, including swarms of drones.

Leonardo estimates the system could generate up to €21 billion in new contracts by 2035, with around 20 countries already expressing interest in Michelangelo.

Future Plans and Collaboration

Following the Ukrainian trials, Leonardo intends to carry out larger-scale testing within NATO programs in 2027. Full integration of the system into NATO and European Union defense structures is planned for 2030. The company is also exploring potential collaboration with the French firm Thales, which could provide additional development opportunities for the platform.

“The first component of the Michelangelo dome is currently being built for our friends in Ukraine. The initial tests will take place there in a real-world environment.” - Roberto Cingolani

The planned testing of the Michelangelo system in Ukraine represents a critical step in strengthening the country's defensive capabilities. Amid escalating regional threats, such advanced air defense technology could significantly enhance security levels. Cooperation with international partners like Leonardo also underscores the global support for Ukraine's defense, which may positively influence the nation's political and economic stability.
