Tommaso Giacomel's Season Cut Short by Heart Condition

Italian biathlete Tommaso Giacomel has been forced to end his 2025/2026 World Cup season prematurely due to a heart condition discovered following his participation in the 2026 Olympics. After withdrawing from a mass start event, medical examinations by the Italian Winter Sports Federation diagnosed him with an atrial conduction disorder. This necessitated surgery, which was performed successfully, and Giacomel is scheduled for discharge from the hospital on February 26.

While he will not compete for the remainder of this season, Giacomel intends to return to elite competition for the 2030 Olympics in France. The athlete confirmed his plans, stating:

“I will not be competing this season.”

The procedure and subsequent recovery are critical steps toward achieving his long-term athletic goals.

A Recurring Health Concern in Biathlon

Giacomel's case is not an isolated incident in the sport of biathlon, where other athletes have faced similar cardiac issues. Notable examples include:

  • Sivert Guttorm Bakken, who encountered serious heart problems in 2022;
  • Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, who underwent treatment and recovery;
  • Johanna Puff, who was diagnosed with myocarditis.

These situations point to a concerning trend of cardiac health problems emerging among top-level biathletes.

Tommaso Giacomel remains hopeful for a successful return to the sport and is focused on a future comeback. His situation underscores the critical importance of rigorous medical monitoring and preventative healthcare for elite athletes. This incident may prompt winter sports federations to enhance their medical screening protocols and athlete support systems to better manage such risks in the future.
