RAI's Proposal for a Palestinian Performer at Eurovision

The Italian state broadcaster, RAI, has formally proposed to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) that a Palestinian artist be allowed to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest outside of the competition. This initiative has sparked intense debate, occurring against a backdrop of calls from some countries to boycott the contest due to Israel's participation. The Eurovision Song Contest, while primarily a cultural event, has often found itself intersecting with international political tensions.

In late January 2026, three members of RAI's board sent a letter to the EBU expressing their desire to support a Palestinian performer. Concurrently, Levante, a participant in the 2026 Sanremo festival, stated she would refuse to represent Italy at Eurovision if she won Sanremo, should Israel remain in the contest.

The 2026 Eurovision Boycott Situation

Other countries that have expressed a desire to boycott Eurovision 2026 include:

  • Ireland
  • Spain
  • The Netherlands

Despite these calls, Israel has been permitted to participate. It is notable that no vote was held on Israel's participation at the EBU's General Assembly. The organization has yet to issue an official response to RAI's proposal. This scenario highlights the complex political undercurrents that can accompany major international cultural events.

RAI's initiative challenges the traditional principles of Eurovision participation, reflecting the increasing politicization of such cultural platforms. The conflict between artists and nations supporting or boycotting specific countries' involvement could influence the future format and international reputation of the contest. Amid rising global tensions, proposals of this nature may catalyze broader discussions about the role of cultural diplomacy and artistic expression.
