Ivan Marchuk on Longevity and the Creative Spark

Ukraine's People's Artist Ivan Marchuk, now 90 years old, recently shared in an interview the personal habits he credits for his long life. Among them are a deep interest in yoga, a disciplined approach to nutrition, and periodic fasting. These practices have become essential to his artistic process, helping him maintain both energy and inspiration over many decades. An exhibition at the Museum of the History of Kyiv features books that were seized from his home during a 1980s search, further highlighting his long-standing fascination with yogic traditions.

The Artistic Journey of Ivan Marchuk

A recipient of the Taras Shevchenko Prize, Marchuk completed only seven years of formal schooling before enrolling at the Lviv College of Applied Arts named after Ivan Trush. He later invented a distinctive painting technique known as plontanism. At a Sotheby's auction, his work 'Here Peace Has Settled' sold for €72,000—nearly 30% above its pre-sale estimate of €40,000–60,000.

From the moment I was born, I was kicking. As I grew up, I wanted to conquer the world. After finishing seven classes, I was already a leader. I entered college and still aimed to be first—I accepted nothing less. That insatiability, obsession, and stubbornness carried me through life. Plus, extreme organization and determination. — Ivan Marchuk

The artist also opened up about his wellness philosophy: 'I came across books about yogis, which were circulated and sold as samizdat at the time. I was drawn to yoga, Tibetan sages, proper eating, and various health systems—including periodic fasting.' He believes this lifestyle directly contributed to his longevity: 'I think it made a difference: eat little, sleep little, and work a lot. I was very strict about it. Though I would occasionally allow myself a drink…'

Through his art, Ivan Marchuk continues to inspire new generations, offering not only his creative talent but also a deeply rooted life philosophy.

His life and work stand as a testament to how blending artistic passion with a healthy lifestyle can lead to a long and fruitful career. His unique painting method and his success at international auctions underscore his major contribution to Ukrainian visual arts. The influence of his philosophy on younger artists may serve as a powerful example for anyone seeking achievement in both art and life.

As Marchuk continues to gain recognition for his unique artistic vision, it's interesting to note that some of his works have recently surfaced in unexpected places, including the collections of prominent figures like Kolomoisky. These discoveries further illustrate the artist's impact on the cultural landscape. For more insights into the whereabouts of Marchuk's paintings, explore this article.
