Celebrating Ivan Marchuk’s 90th Birthday

On May 12, Ukraine’s People’s Artist Ivan Marchuk turned 90. His daughter, Bohdana Pivnenko, marked the occasion by sharing family photos on social media. The milestone was further celebrated with the opening of a permanent exhibition of Marchuk’s works at the Chocolate House cultural center in Kyiv, which also features his ‘Shevchenkiana’ series.

A recipient of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize, Marchuk is renowned for his distinctive ‘plontanism’ technique—a style built from intricate, interwoven lines that form highly detailed compositions. He was awarded the Shevchenko Prize in 1997 for his contributions to painting.

Global Recognition and Artistic Legacy

At a Sotheby’s auction, Marchuk’s painting ‘Here Peace Has Settled’ sold for €72,000, surpassing its pre-sale estimate of €40,000–60,000 by nearly 30%. This sale underscores the international acclaim for the artist’s work. Bohdana Pivnenko, who serves as the general director and artistic director of the National Ensemble of Soloists ‘Kyiv Camerata’ and is a professor and People’s Artist of Ukraine, offered her congratulations to her father, writing:

“Dad Ivan Marchuk is 90! Many years!!!” — Bohdana Pivnenko

This birthday is not only a personal achievement for the artist but also a significant moment in Ukraine’s cultural landscape. Marchuk’s work, especially his pioneering plontanism technique, continues to inspire new generations of artists and art lovers. The exhibition at the Chocolate House and the strong auction result highlight a growing global interest in Ukrainian art.
