A Show of Support for Ukraine at Eurovision

Israel used its broadcast of the second Eurovision semi-final on its state television channel to voice backing for Ukraine. Following the performance by Ukrainian singer Leleka, the commentator referenced the ongoing war in Ukraine and expressed solidarity with its people. A video clip of this moment quickly spread online, prompting a wave of positive reactions from the Israeli Friends of Ukraine community.

Background on the Gesture

This act of support unfolded against the backdrop of several countries boycotting Eurovision due to Israel's participation, a response to the war in Gaza. The first semi-final of Eurovision 2026, held on the night of May 12–13, was also marked by an incident. During Israeli singer Noam Bettan's performance, protesters in the audience shouted and attempted to disrupt the show, requiring police intervention.

Commenting on the support for Ukraine, the Israeli commentator stated:

“We are talking about the fifth Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Ukraine during a war. We stand in solidarity with Ukrainians, who are largely singing about pressing issues related to their country. Glory to Ukraine!”

This statement has become a symbol of the support Ukrainians feel during the conflict. Representatives from the Israeli Friends of Ukraine community also underscored the importance of mutual backing between nations, noting:

“Yesterday we parted ways. In moments like these, you truly feel how vital support between our peoples is. Thank you to everyone who remains vocal, who supports Ukraine and Ukrainians even during the live broadcast of Europe’s biggest music competition.”

This moment of solidarity at an international music contest highlights the significance of unity in times of war. The commentator’s expression of support served as a symbolic act, reflecting empathy and mutual aid between nations enduring difficult periods. Amid global conflicts, such gestures can significantly shape public opinion and cross-national relations.

In a similar spirit of international solidarity, 14 nations came together at the Venice Biennale to issue a joint declaration, emphasizing the importance of unity and support among countries facing challenges. Such gestures highlight the collective response to global conflicts and the significance of artistic platforms in promoting shared values.
