Recognition of the Armenian Genocide
Israel's government has unanimously approved a resolution that formally recognizes the Armenian Genocide. The measure is now set to go before the Knesset, the country's parliament, for a vote. This initiative was brought forward by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who stated that
“acknowledging the destruction of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire is a moral and historical duty of the state”. The decision comes amid worsening bilateral relations between Israel and Turkey, driven largely by the ongoing war in Gaza.
The Gaza War and Turkey's Response
The conflict in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, following a terrorist attack by Hamas. Turkey, in turn, has accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians, a charge that has intensified as the death toll has exceeded 73,000 people. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have labeled the Israeli resolution as a politically motivated move by Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Saar responded by arguing that
“Turkey's false narratives against Israel should not grant it immunity from historical truth”.
In retaliation to Israel's actions, Turkey has announced a complete halt to all trade and economic ties with Israel. The Turkish measures include:
- closing ports and airspace to Israeli ships and aircraft;
- banning Turkish vessels from entering Israeli ports;
- prohibiting the use of Turkish ports for transporting weapons and ammunition intended for Israel.
As a result, tensions between Israel and Turkey remain high, and this new resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide could further strain their bilateral relationship.
This resolution may carry significant consequences for Israeli diplomacy, as acknowledging the Armenian Genocide risks deepening the rift with Turkey, a key regional player.
