Israel’s Response to Ukraine’s Accusations

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has pushed back against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s claims regarding a vessel carrying allegedly stolen Ukrainian grain. Saar urged Kyiv to submit any evidence through official diplomatic channels, dismissing what he called “Twitter diplomacy.” The ship in question, the Panormitis, docked at the Israeli port of Haifa carrying 6,200 tons of wheat and over 19,000 tons of barley. It arrived at Haifa around 1:07 a.m. on April 27, Kyiv time.

The Panormitis had loaded its cargo in Berdyansk and later sat at anchor near the port of Kavkaz in Russian territorial waters. Its shipping documents were processed in the Russian port of Temryuk. Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Moscow of building a shadow fleet specifically to export stolen grain.

Adding to the controversy, Israel also permitted another vessel, the Abinsk—also carrying wheat from occupied Ukrainian territory—to enter Haifa port. In response, the European Union is now considering sanctions against Israeli individuals and companies that may be involved in receiving such shipments.

“We reject Twitter diplomacy. Once again, we call on our Ukrainian friends: if you have evidence of theft, provide it through the accepted channels,” said Gideon Saar.

Strained Ties and Geopolitical Fallout

This dispute over grain exports from Ukrainian territory highlights the fragile nature of international relations, especially amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ukraine’s accusations against Israel threaten to damage bilateral ties, which could have ripple effects on both political and economic dynamics in the region.

The EU’s consideration of sanctions underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need to address actions that may violate international law.

In light of the ongoing tensions, the situation raises questions about the broader implications of Ukraine's allegations against Israel.
