Mykhailo Vintoniv Joins National Language Standards Body

Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has appointed Mykhailo Vintoniv as a member of the National Commission for State Language Standards for a six-year term, including a two-month probationary period. The decision was formalized in a government resolution. This appointment comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language in public life.

Academic Background and Professional Experience

Vintoniv brings extensive research and teaching expertise to the role. He holds a Doctor of Philology degree and a professorship, and currently serves as head of the Ukrainian Language Department at the Faculty of Ukrainian Philology, Culture and Arts at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University. He graduated from the Philology Faculty of Donetsk State University in 1993.

From September 1993 to September 2016, he worked at Donetsk National University, where he defended his candidate dissertation in September 1997 on the topic 'Typology of Predicate Forms in Modern Ukrainian.' In October 2013, he completed his doctoral dissertation, which examined the communicative structure of sentences and texts in literary Ukrainian. He was awarded the academic title of professor in December 2015.

Over the course of his career, Vintoniv has authored more than 100 scientific and educational works, and has supervised 13 doctoral dissertations. The National Commission for State Language Standards approved the Ukrainian orthography as the state language standard on March 1, 2026, and on January 15, 2026, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language in affirming Ukrainian statehood.

“Appoint Mykhailo Oleksiyovych Vintoniv as a member of the National Commission for State Language Standards for a term of six years, with a probationary period of two months,” the Cabinet of Ministers resolution states.

Vintoniv's appointment to the National Commission for State Language Standards marks a significant step in Ukraine's language policy development. Given his substantial background in philology and pedagogy, he is expected to contribute to refining Ukrainian language standards and reinforcing its societal role. This move also reflects the government's broader efforts to bolster linguistic identity amid contemporary challenges.
