Legislation to overhaul Ukraine's Frontex partnership

Frontex is the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, coordinating border control along the EU's external borders. Ukraine's government has now sent the Verkhovna Rada a bill aimed at strengthening cooperation with the agency. Deputy Interior Minister Bohdan Drap'yatyi said that the current legal framework does not assign any institution the role of coordinating Frontex interaction or serving as the national contact point.

The draft legislation identifies the Administration of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine as the body responsible for coordinating cooperation between Ukrainian state bodies and Frontex. The goal of the initiative is to create a well-defined framework for engagement with Frontex and to bring Ukraine's border management system closer to European standards.

If the bill is adopted, Ukrainian border governance could become significantly more effective, a key factor in the country's European integration process. Closer ties with Frontex would allow Ukraine to apply established best practices in border control and security, in turn supporting regional stability and a higher level of public safety.
