Funding for Modern Educational Spaces
The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has approved a procedure for providing a subvention to create modern educational spaces. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko announced the allocation of 700 million hryvnias to equip classrooms and laboratories in schools. This funding is designated for purchasing technical and multimedia equipment, as well as furniture for classrooms dedicated to biology, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and STEM labs. This investment is part of a broader effort to rebuild and modernize Ukraine's education system amidst ongoing challenges.
Financing and Selection Criteria
Repair work in educational institutions must be financed from local budgets or with support from partners. This initiative is part of the reform of the senior specialized school, which is the third stage of the New Ukrainian School (NUS). According to the conditions, projects to receive the subvention will be selected on a competitive basis.
"Projects will be selected on a competitive basis. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine will announce the conditions and the start of the application process," stated Yuliia Svyrydenko.
The subvention can be received by municipal schools that meet a series of criteria. Specifically, this applies to schools that will join the network of specialized senior schools in 2027 or are specialized lyceums, as well as those conducting in-person or blended learning. Furthermore, institutions must have at least 60 students in the 8th grade and provide at least 10% co-financing from the local budget.
According to information from the educational ombudsman, Nadiia Leshchyk, Ukrainian communities are obligated to complete the reform of the school network by September 1, 2027. It is important to note that the introduction of specialized education will not lead to the automatic dismissal of teachers in every institution, as reported by the people's deputy Nataliia Pipa, a representative of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science and Innovation.
This initiative by the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers aims to modernize educational infrastructure and improve the quality of learning in Ukrainian schools. The allocated funds will allow not only for the updating of technical equipment but also for the creation of a more comfortable environment for students. Through the competitive selection of projects, it is planned to ensure transparency and the effective use of state resources. Importantly, the school network reform is comprehensive and envisages the active participation of local communities in its implementation.
As the Ukrainian government invests significantly in modernizing educational facilities, understanding the broader implications of these reforms is crucial.
