Accelerating Governance Changes in State-Owned Enterprises
On May 6, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers addressed the need to speed up management reforms in state-owned companies and banks. The supervisory board of NNPC Energoatom has been instructed to immediately implement previous government decisions and launch a tender for a new management board within one week.
The Ministry of Finance has been tasked with evaluating the performance of Sense Bank’s governing bodies and expediting the bank’s privatization. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko stated:
“The bank must be privatized this year. Personnel changes should be made if necessary.” - Yuliia Svyrydenko
She also emphasized that Ukrgasbank remains a priority for privatization, with preparatory processes already underway.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the necessity of privatizing Sense Bank within 2024, stressing:
“There must be no delays in the privatization process: the bank must be privatized this year.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Through these measures, the government aims to liberalize the banking sector and expand entrepreneurial opportunities across Ukraine. These efforts are part of a broader push to align with European governance standards and improve financial transparency.
The Strategic Importance of Privatizing State-Owned Banks
Privatizing state-owned banks like Sense Bank and Ukrgasbank is a critical step toward improving Ukraine’s economic landscape. The government seeks to attract investment and enhance the efficiency of these institutions, which could positively impact business development.
Accelerating privatization also signals the authorities’ commitment to moving toward European management standards and greater financial openness.
As the government emphasizes the urgency of privatizing state-owned banks, it is also crucial to consider the broader implications of these governance changes. Recent announcements from President Zelenskyy about a forthcoming reshuffle in government and state enterprises highlight the administration’s commitment to reform.
