Streamlined Access to Ukrainian Citizenship
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has officially designated five countries whose citizens can now acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified process without having to surrender their original passports. This regulation, outlined in Cabinet Resolution No. 1412, took effect on January 16, 2026. It follows the adoption of the multiple citizenship law by the Verkhovna Rada in June 2025.
Countries Included in the New Policy
The list of eligible countries includes:
- Canada
- Germany
- Poland
- United States
- Czech Republic
Citizens from these nations can obtain Ukrainian citizenship without renouncing their current nationality. Conversely, Ukrainians residing in these countries will be able to acquire citizenship there without losing their Ukrainian passport. Notably, this policy excludes citizens of aggressor states.
This initiative marks a significant move toward easing citizenship acquisition for foreigners and highlights Ukraine's commitment to strengthening ties with its diaspora. Additionally, it is expected to encourage investment and bolster economic partnerships with the countries on the list. Overall, this law serves as a strategic tool to enhance Ukraine's international reputation while supporting Ukrainians living abroad.
