Personnel changes in the Security Service of Ukraine

On January 5, 2023, significant personnel changes took place in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). Vasyl Malyuk resigned from the position of head of the SBU, and Yevhen Khmara was appointed as acting head of this agency. The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed decree No. 18/2026 regarding the leadership structure of the SBU.

International events and arrests

On the same day, a court hearing was held in New York against Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores. Maduro is accused of drug trafficking and terrorism under several serious criminal charges. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for March 17, 2023.

In addition, a 24-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of committing a terrorist act in Kyiv, specifically, she detonated the car of a national guardsman at the request of the Russian Federation. These events highlight the tense situation in the country.

It was also reported that Serhiy Kyslytsia was appointed first deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. In connection with these changes, a meeting of the 'coalition of willing' will take place in Paris on January 6, 2023, with Vitkoff and Kushner participating. These events indicate the activation of international cooperation of Ukraine in the face of current challenges.

Personnel changes in the SBU reflect the attempts of the Ukrainian leadership to adapt to new security challenges, particularly in the context of growing terrorist threats. The appointment of new leadership may indicate an intention to strengthen control over the situation in the country and respond to the challenges faced by the state. International activity, particularly the meeting of the 'coalition of willing', indicates the strategic importance of Ukraine's cooperation with partners in the field of security and regional stability.
