Mission Without Ground Control

California-based startup AstroForge is preparing to deploy the pioneering Autonomy-1 mission in early 2027, marking the first-ever space mission to operate completely independently without any commands from Earth. This groundbreaking launch will coincide with the maiden flight of Stoke Space’s Nova Pathfinder rocket. Autonomy-1 will be powered by the AI system Solo, which will autonomously manage every aspect of the mission, including the operation of NASA’s COMPASS scientific photometer designed for solar studies. While the spacecraft will continuously send telemetry and scientific data back to Earth, it will not receive any instructions once deployed.

Ambitious Vision and Past Challenges

Founded in early 2022, AstroForge aims to build a fleet of deep-space probes focused on mining metals from asteroids. However, the company has faced setbacks in recent years. In 2023, their Brokkr-1 satellite failed to activate its ore processing technology in orbit, and in February 2025, the Odin probe lost communication en route to its target.

The Solo AI system is slated for a trial run during the 2024 DeepSpace-2 mission, which will fly as a secondary payload aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. Matt Jalich, a spokesperson for AstroForge, emphasized,

“Autonomy-1 will be the first mission to complete all its tasks after rocket separation without any ground-based commands, all thanks to the Solo AI system.”

This mission represents a significant advancement in autonomous space technologies, with the potential to reduce costs and boost mission efficiency. Success could unlock new possibilities for extracting valuable resources from asteroids—resources critical to future space exploration programs. Furthermore, developing such self-reliant systems is essential for minimizing dependence on Earth-based communication, a vital factor for long-duration deep-space missions.

As AstroForge prepares for its groundbreaking mission, the advancements in reusable rocket technology are equally significant. For instance, Stoke Space's recent funding success is set to enhance the capabilities of the Nova Pathfinder rocket, which will play a crucial role in the upcoming launch of Autonomy-1. This synergy between innovative missions and robust rocket technology highlights the rapid evolution of space exploration in the coming years.
