Garik Korohodskyi’s stance on criticism of military leadership
Businessman Garik Korohodskyi has called for a ban on any criticism of Ukraine’s military command until the war ends. He suggests introducing prison terms for investigative journalists and bloggers who speak out against the actions of military leaders. This proposal has sparked backlash, with critics warning it could lead to the persecution of those exposing problems within the armed forces.
In Ukraine, active-duty soldiers are already prohibited from publicly questioning orders, combat decisions, or the actions of military commanders. For civilians, however, criticizing government or military officials is generally protected under free speech laws and is not a criminal offense. That said, the country’s Criminal Code does impose penalties for spreading information that discredits the Armed Forces of Ukraine or obstructs their operations under martial law.
Korohodskyi’s political ambitions
Korohodskyi is also running for the position of mayor of Kyiv. He recently became embroiled in a public dispute with Veronika Olshanska after a post about speaking Russian at home. In response to his comments, Olshanska filed an official complaint with the Security Service of Ukraine.
Korohodskyi stated: 'The law bans it for military personnel, but non-military investigators and bloggers should shut the f*ck up until victory. I would introduce criminal liability for this—not fines or dislikes, but real prison time.' - Garik Korohodskyi
Korohodskyi’s remarks have sparked widespread debate, becoming part of a larger conversation about the limits of free speech during wartime. In Ukraine, where an armed conflict is ongoing, the issue of criticizing military operations and leadership raises concerns about the potential impact on democratic freedoms and the ability to hold military institutions accountable. These discussions could shape the political climate, especially with elections approaching in which Korohodskyi himself is a candidate.
The ongoing debate surrounding freedom of expression in Ukraine becomes even more complex when considering recent events involving cyber attacks. Notably, Russian pranksters Vovan and Lexus claimed that they have been targeted by Ukrainian cyber operatives, highlighting the escalating tensions and the blurred lines of information warfare.
