Major Overpass Renovation Underway in Kyiv
A major overhaul of the railway overpass on Polarna Street in Kyiv's Obolon district is now in progress. The project is being carried out in phases, with full completion scheduled for the summer of 2026. Work is currently focused on the section of the overpass leading towards Heroiv Dnipra Street. While winter weather caused delays, construction has now entered an active phase.
Crews have already completed the reinforcement and concreting of the monolithic roadway slab. Current activities involve constructing the approach embankments and sidewalks. The renovation incorporates universal design principles to improve accessibility:
- Curbs at pedestrian crossings will be lowered;
- Tactile paving for navigation will be installed.
All construction work involves partial, staged restrictions on both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This type of infrastructure renewal is critical for maintaining the safety and functionality of Kyiv's aging transport network.
This same overpass underwent a major reconstruction less than ten years ago. That previous renovation, completed in 2017, cost the city budget 202 million UAH. Adjusted for inflation and current exchange rates, that amount is roughly equivalent to 400 million UAH today. The primary construction work, which will allow for the full restoration of traffic flow, is planned to be finished by the summer of 2026.
Part of a Broader Infrastructure Renewal Program
The renovation of the Polarna Street overpass is one component of a larger program to modernize Kyiv's infrastructure. The inclusion of barrier-free design principles reflects the city administration's goal of ensuring comfortable and safe mobility for all residents. The project's completion in summer 2026 is expected to significantly improve the traffic situation in the Obolon district, potentially reducing congestion and enhancing pedestrian safety.
