Changes to the ‘Karaoke on Maidan’ Show
The popular Ukrainian TV show ‘Karaoke on Maidan’ has moved its filming location from Khreshchatyk to Kontraktova Square. The decision was made because a memorial for fallen Ukrainian soldiers now stands just 100 meters from the original filming site. Igor Kondratyuk, the show’s creator and creative producer, explained that continuing to film at the old spot would have been inappropriate, as farewell ceremonies for the deceased take place there on Saturdays and Sundays, which are the show’s filming days.
Igor Kondratyuk: ‘Because just 100 meters from our previous filming location, there is a memorial for fallen defenders. We all agreed that keeping the old location was not an option.’
Licensing and a New Host
Kondratyuk has now licensed the production of ‘Karaoke on Maidan’ to the TET television channel. The latest episode aired on TET on May 10, featuring Ukrainian hip-hop artist Khas (Haydar Aliyevich Hassan) as the new host. Kondratyuk commented on the transition:
Igor Kondratyuk: ‘I granted TET a license to produce a certain number of episodes of ‘Karaoke on Maidan’ under my supervision as the author and creative producer. On these terms, I agreed to try this experiment, which I call a remake with different people and a different host.’
The show’s format and location changes stem from the ongoing war in Ukraine. Filming at the new site reflects a conscious effort to honor the memory of fallen soldiers and maintain respect during entertainment programming. This shift highlights how cultural initiatives can adapt to social and historical contexts, which is crucial for preserving national identity and collective memory. Such steps may also help raise public awareness about the country’s wartime losses and their significance.
The recent changes to the filming of ‘Karaoke on Maidan’ reflect a broader conversation about cultural sensitivity in times of conflict.
