Ukraine Braces for Major Weather Shift: Deep Freeze to Give Way to Thaw Starting January 26

Погода в Україні готує сюрприз: з 26 січня очікується різке потепління після холоду.

Major Weather Shift Ahead for Ukraine: From Freeze to Thaw

According to meteorologist Natalia Didenko, the dominant high-pressure system that has controlled Ukraine's weather is finally breaking down. Starting January 26, a major shift in the weather pattern is expected as atmospheric fronts move across the country, bringing warmer temperatures along with precipitation and strong winds. Didenko notes that this warming trend will be accompanied by rising temperatures, though a return to colder conditions is possible from around January 31.

For the weekend of January 24-25, freezing conditions will persist across Ukraine. Overnight lows will drop to -7...-12°C (-12...-10°F), with temperatures in the north potentially reaching as low as -15°C (5°F). Daytime highs are expected to range from -2 to -7°C (28...19°F). While the south and west may see some thawing, other regions can expect snow, sleet, and even rain in the far south. In Kyiv, overnight temperatures on the 24th and 25th will be around -12°C (10°F), with daytime highs up to -5°C (23°F).

Expected Warming and Its Consequences

From January 26, temperatures across Ukraine are forecast to jump to 0...+5°C (32...41°F), with the south reaching up to +12°C (54°F). In Crimea, temperatures could climb as high as +14°C (57°F). The entire country will experience a thaw, but Didenko warns that the warmer weather will come with precipitation and gusty winds, reducing overall comfort. A return to colder weather is tentatively expected around January 31.

'That powerful, super-powerful anticyclone which has influenced Ukraine's weather for several weeks... is finally collapsing. High atmospheric pressure will be replaced by low pressure,' stated Natalia Didenko.

This significant change in Ukraine's weather could impact various sectors of daily life, including:

  • Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Transportation

Such a sharp temperature rise in winter can lead to significant disruptions in field work planning and require infrastructure to adapt to the new conditions. The potential return of cold weather later in the month also poses a health risk, making it important for the public to monitor forecasts and heed meteorologists' advice. These rapid swings between extreme cold and sudden thaw are a challenging feature of the region's winter weather.
