Kateryna Malashchuk's European Championship Performance

At the European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi, Georgia, Kateryna Malashchuk earned Ukraine's first medals of the competition. She claimed bronze in both the snatch and the clean & jerk, and secured the silver medal for the overall total.

Competing in the women's 48kg category, Malashchuk lifted 77kg in the snatch to win bronze. She then achieved a 95kg lift in the clean & jerk, earning another bronze medal. Her combined total of 172kg was enough for second place overall, making her the European vice-champion. This strong showing provides a welcome boost for Ukrainian sport on the international stage.

2026 Winter Olympic Results

In contrast to this success, the Ukrainian team concluded the 2026 Winter Olympics without winning a single medal. Despite this, Ukrainian athletes managed to place within the top ten on eight separate occasions. The top finishers included:

  • Sixth place finishes by Angelina Brykina, Oleksandr Okypniuk, Dmytro Kotovskyi (freestyle skiing, aerials, mixed team);
  • Yulianna Tunytska, Ihor Hoi / Nazarii Kachmar, Andrii Mandzii, Oksana Makh / Olena Stetskiv (luge, team relay);
  • Seventh place for Oksana Makh / Olena Stetskiv (luge, women's doubles);
  • Eighth place for Dmytro Pidruchnyi, Vitalii Mandzyn, Olena Horodna, Oksana Merkushina (biathlon, mixed relay).

Malashchuk's European podium finishes signal a resilient recovery and progress for Ukrainian athletics in international competition. These achievements underscore the potential of the nation's athletes, who continue to strive for excellence despite challenging circumstances. While the Winter Games were disappointing, results in other sports demonstrate that Ukrainian competitors remain formidable and capable of world-class performances.

While Kateryna Malashchuk's recent achievements at the European Weightlifting Championships highlight Ukraine's potential in weightlifting, the nation's performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics reflects a different narrative. Despite not securing any medals, Ukrainian athletes demonstrated remarkable skill, finishing in the top ten in various events, which showcases their resilience and determination on the international stage.
