The Threat Posed by Guided Aerial Bombs
Russian guided aerial bombs (GABs) present a severe danger to Ukrainian defenders on the front lines. In an interview with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko, Ukrainian Armed Forces officer Andriy Dmytrenko discussed this challenge and the difficulties Ukraine faces in countering Russian air power. He explained that Western military doctrines, which are predicated on achieving total air superiority, are ineffective in Ukraine due to the lack of such dominance. This highlights a critical gap between NATO-standard planning and the realities of the current conflict.
How Russian Aircraft Employ These Bombs
Russian aviation holds a significant advantage through the mass deployment of heavy guided aerial bombs. Pilots of Russian aircraft release these bombs from a distance of approximately 20-30 kilometers from the front line, staying outside the range of Ukraine's short-range air defenses. This tactic complicates the task for Ukrainian forces, as repelling these aircraft requires long-range ground-based systems or Western fighter jets equipped with appropriate missiles. Dmytrenko stressed that systems like the Patriot could intercept aircraft at ranges of about 50 km, but deploying them near the front is perilous, as they become high-priority targets for the enemy.
Andriy Dmytrenko noted that GABs provide a serious advantage for Russian troops, as they target individual artillery positions and drone operators, significantly complicating the situation for Ukrainian forces. He also mentioned instances where these bombs landed just 50-100 meters from Ukrainian military positions without causing casualties or damaging equipment.
Expanding the capabilities of the Ukrainian air force, particularly through the supply of F-16 fighter jets and long-range radar detection systems, remains key to solving the GAB problem. Dmytrenko emphasized the importance of these measures for ensuring an effective counter to Russian aviation.
The situation with Russia's use of guided aerial bombs underscores the complexity of military operations in Ukraine, where air superiority is critically important for successful combat. The need for modern air defense systems and fighters like the F-16 is becoming increasingly urgent, as they could substantially impact the balance of power on the front.
