Life Sentence for Treason Handed Down to Kyiv Man
A resident of Kyiv has been sentenced to life imprisonment for state treason. The man voluntarily collaborated with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), providing targeting coordinates for strikes against energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and Ukrainian military positions. His actions were aimed at assisting the enemy in adjusting its attacks, leading to severe consequences for the civilian population. This case highlights the ongoing internal security challenges Ukraine faces during the war.
Recruitment and Collaboration with the FSB
The Kyiv resident was recruited by an FSB officer after he initiated contact with a representative of the Russian special service via Telegram in September 2024. The man agreed to cooperate and began transmitting intelligence on:
- the locations of Ukrainian Defense Force units;
- the positions of territorial recruitment and social support centers in the capital;
- photographs showing the placement of air defense systems;
- the approximate flight paths of the aggressor state's unmanned aerial vehicles.
Additionally, the convict reported to his handler on the results of the strikes. His activity first drew the FSB's attention in the spring of 2024 due to comments in Telegram channels and on VKontakte, where he advocated for Ukraine's capture. Following this, he was remotely recruited, assigned tasks, and set up with covert communication channels through anonymous messenger chats and email.
