Arrest of Cybercriminals in Lviv
Three local residents have been detained by the Cyber Police in the Lviv region on suspicion of breaking into gaming accounts belonging to Ukrainians and foreigners. The stolen credentials were resold for cryptocurrency on a website with a Russian-registered domain. The 19-year-old mastermind from Drohobych, who connected with his accomplices last year through gaming forums, orchestrated the scheme. Using social engineering tactics and programming expertise, the group infected victims' devices with stealer malware designed to harvest login data.
More than 610,000 gaming profiles were compromised as a result of the operation. These accounts were listed for sale on a site whose domain is registered in Russia. Based on the evidence gathered, police executed 10 authorized searches at the suspects' residences, seizing a large volume of electronics and cash.
Seized Assets
The searches led to the confiscation of the following items:
- 37 mobile phones,
- 11 desktop computers,
- 7 laptops,
- 5 tablets,
- 4 USB drives,
- bank cards and handwritten notes,
- cash totaling $32,000 and 2,000 euros.
Authorities also uncovered over 300 records containing data on premium accounts. The illicit operation’s shadow revenue may have reached 10 million Ukrainian hryvnias. All three group members have been charged under Parts 4 of Article 185 and 5 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. They have been remanded in custody, facing up to 15 years in prison.
The pre-trial investigation remains ongoing. This is not the first time Ukrainian cyber police have cracked down on digital criminals. Previously, a hacker from Lviv was found to have cracked paid software for foreign clients, causing nearly 1.5 million hryvnias in damages to copyright holders. Another case involved the hijacking of social media accounts, with ransom demands for restoring access.
This case highlights the growing issue of cybercrime in Ukraine, particularly among young people who leverage their skills for illegal financial gain.
