Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Partially Reopens After Russian Strike

Частина Київської лаври відновлює роботу після нападу з боку Росії.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Resumes Operations

Following a Russian attack on June 15 that damaged the Dormition Cathedral, the National Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Reserve partially resumed its operations on June 19. The strike caused significant destruction, including a fire on the cathedral roof from a direct hit. Fortunately, relics and liturgical items from the monastery were successfully evacuated.

Visitors can now access the following areas:

  • Near Caves
  • Great Lavra Bell Tower
  • Church of the Saviour at Berestove
  • Refectory Church
  • Museum exhibitions

Group tours have also resumed, available by advance booking. Due to restoration work at the Dormition Cathedral, services of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine will temporarily be held at the Refectory Church of Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves. According to the reserve’s press service,

“despite the damage caused by the Russian attack on June 15, spiritual life at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra continues.”

Aggression and Recovery

On June 15, Russia struck Ukraine, hitting Kyiv particularly hard, including the UNESCO World Heritage site. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s information and education department issued an official statement about the strike on the Dormition Cathedral, but it did not condemn Russia’s actions. Meanwhile, Svyrydenko confirmed that the cathedral would be restored. The Church of the Saviour at Berestove reopened to visitors as early as June 17.

This partial reopening marks a vital step in safeguarding Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual heritage amid ongoing aggression. Despite the damage, the reserve continues to fulfill its role, demonstrating resilience and community dedication. The resumption of services and access to other Lavra sites may help restore spiritual life in the region and boost morale among residents during these challenging times.

The recent reopening of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra highlights the ongoing efforts to restore the site following the recent attack. However, significant work remains, particularly regarding the repairs needed for the Dormition Cathedral's roof, which will take over ten days to complete. This restoration is crucial for preserving the cultural heritage and spiritual significance of the Lavra amidst the current challenges.
