Kyiv's Electricity Supply Crisis
Kyiv is enduring the most severe electricity supply crisis since Russia's full-scale invasion began. Residents of the capital are now experiencing power cuts lasting between 9 and 12 hours daily, with an average of just 3 hours of electricity available. This dire situation stems from a nationwide energy deficit and extensive damage to the power grid from targeted missile and drone attacks. Compounding the hardship, temperatures in Kyiv have plummeted to -17 degrees Celsius (-1.4°F), creating perilous living conditions for millions. This crisis highlights the ongoing targeting of Ukraine's civilian infrastructure as a tactic of war.
Up to 80,000 calls from residents reporting outages now flood the dispatch center every day. In response to the emergency, the number of repair crews has been increased from 12 to 60, working around the clock to fix the damage. However, the forecast from energy officials remains grim, with no improvement expected for weeks. The President has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector.
Guidance for Residents
Serhiy Kovalenko, a representative of the energy sector, stated that
“the electricity supply situation in Kyiv is currently the most difficult it has been throughout the entire war”. He urged residents to
“hold on for a few weeks until the weather improves slightly”. Kovalenko also stressed the critical importance of business preparedness, noting: “If businesses had not prepared, we would not be able to buy food.”
Given that
“when you have even an average of 3 hours of power and 10 without it – these are horrific conditions”, residents are advised to:
- Check the circuit breakers in their apartments;
- Contact electricians from their housing association or building management for a professional inspection.
