Situation with electricity supply in Kyiv
Kyiv may be left without electricity for 20-22 hours due to the practically destroyed 'Kyiv' substation, which provides power from the Rivne NPP. This may happen during frosts when the temperature will drop to -5-10 degrees. The internal generation of the capital region currently covers only 20-25% of the needs, and the electricity deficit is about 70%.
Experts warn that in the event of frosts, the situation with electricity supply may significantly worsen.
'If we do not switch to a peaceful energy track, the reality for Kyiv will be that during the upcoming frosts of minus 5-10 degrees, which are promised in a week or two, Kyiv will be without electricity for 20-22 hours.'
— Oleg Popenko
He also indicated that 'one or two impacts there - and we will use those 20-25%. But at a temperature of -10 degrees, these 20-25% will turn into 10%.'
The supply of new transformers to improve the situation takes from six months to a year, which adds additional challenges to the energy supply of the capital. In the event of a negative development of events, residents may face serious electricity supply problems that will require urgent measures to stabilize the situation.
Vulnerability of energy infrastructure
The situation with electricity supply in Kyiv highlights the vulnerability of energy infrastructure during winter frosts. The lack of proper energy supply can lead to serious social and economic consequences for the capital's residents. It is important for the relevant authorities to take urgent measures to improve the state of energy facilities and ensure stable electricity supply during the winter period.
