Kyiv's Missed Deadline for Backup Power Puts City at Risk

Недостаток резервного живлення в Києві створює загрози для мешканців міста.

Kyiv's Backup Power Supply Situation

Kyiv has failed to meet its own deadline for installing a promised 125 MW backup power generation system by the end of 2025, a delay that threatens the stability of the capital's electricity supply. Expert Oleh Popenko noted that Kyiv's average electricity consumption is 1.2-1.4 GW, but during peak times, especially on cold days, demand can surge to 2 GW. This vulnerability is particularly acute given the ongoing strain on Ukraine's national energy grid.

The city authorities have not fulfilled their obligation to create these vital backup power capacities. The system was supposed to be based on gas-piston units, but, according to Popenko, 10% of the required generation was not installed on time. The expert stressed that this capacity could and should have been deployed back in 2022 or 2023.

Consequences of Project Implementation Delays

It is currently unknown when the remaining generation capacity will be installed.

"We still need about 2-3 months," noted Oleh Popenko, pointing to delays in completing the program.
He also emphasized that Kyiv 'missed the connection program,' which could have serious consequences for the capital's energy security.

The situation with Kyiv's backup power supply underscores the critical importance of timely infrastructure project completion, especially in the context of rising electricity consumption during winter months. Failure to meet these obligations could lead to severe power outages, impacting not only the daily lives of residents but also the region's economic stability. Authorities must find ways to accelerate project implementation to ensure the resilience of the capital's energy system.
