Upgrades for Kyiv's Pumping Stations
Kyiv is rolling out new Japanese-made equipment at its pumping stations to ensure a steady water supply, bolstering energy resilience through international aid. Mayor Vitali Klitschko met with a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), led by Senior Vice President Yuko Mitsui. During the visit, Japanese representatives toured two artesian pumping stations in the capital.
Modern Water Purification Systems
These stations are being fitted with advanced water purification systems capable of operating independently and without interruption. The new equipment was provided to Kyiv and its water utility, PrAT AK Kyivvodokanal, by JICA under the Emergency Recovery Program, a technical assistance project. This upgrade will secure stable water access for roughly 60,000 residents. The systems can run autonomously during power outages, a critical feature given ongoing infrastructure challenges.
Separately, the Ukrainian government has approved nationwide resilience plans to safeguard water supply systems from potential Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. Klitschko stated:
“Kyiv and PrAT AK Kyivvodokanal received this new equipment from JICA as part of the Emergency Recovery Program, an international technical assistance project.”
These measures are vital for physically protecting critical infrastructure and providing backup power to water utilities and pumping stations.
This initiative is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to enhance resilience against external threats, particularly amid the ongoing war. By modernizing pumping stations and adopting new water supply technologies, the project not only improves water access but also reduces dependence on centralized energy sources. Ultimately, the partnership with Japanese counterparts has the potential to strengthen infrastructure in Kyiv and across the country.
