Ice Storm Cripples Kyiv: City Services Battle Blizzard Aftermath

Крижана буря завдала серйозних ушкоджень Києву: служби міста борються з наслідками стихії.

Transportation Gridlock in Kyiv Following Severe Ice Storm

A severe ice storm and heavy snowfall on February 16, 2026, caused major transportation disruptions across Kyiv. Municipal services have mobilized to clear roads and sidewalks in an effort to restore normalcy. Authorities have urged drivers and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution due to widespread traffic jams and accidents on the icy streets.

The snowfall began on February 15, and by the next day, it was clear the city required an urgent emergency response. One reported accident involved a car sliding on a snow-covered slope and colliding with other vehicles. In a striking illustration of the difficult conditions, passengers were even seen pushing a stranded public bus on a critical incline.

Municipal Response Efforts

The municipal enterprise Kyivavtodor deployed 289 pieces of specialized equipment to clear the roads. These vehicles operated in convoys of 4 to 10 machines to tackle the snow more efficiently. Additionally, 31 teams comprising 216 workers were assigned to manually clear sidewalks, bus stops, and pedestrian crossings. In the city's parks and squares, 67 units of machinery and 755 workers from Kyivzelenbud were engaged in cleanup operations.

City officials have asked drivers to avoid parking on shoulders and outer lanes, and to refrain from using private vehicles if possible. Pedestrians are advised to be vigilant and to use reflective gear after dark.

The situation remains challenging, but utility crews are working to improve conditions. This severe weather event highlights the critical need for cities to be prepared for winter extremes, which can severely strain transportation networks. While road and sidewalk clearance is the top priority for municipal services, demonstrating their readiness to handle extreme weather, public cooperation with safety advisories is equally vital for overall road safety.
