Heating and Water Crisis in Kyiv

Following a nighttime attack, more than 5,635 apartment buildings in Kyiv have lost their heating supply, with parts of the city also cut off from water. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on January 20th that these residential buildings were without heat. This marks a severe reversal; after a massive attack on January 9th, only 16 buildings remained without heating, with service restored to all others. However, nearly 80% of the buildings that had their heating restored since January 9th are now without it once again. These repeated infrastructure strikes are part of a wider campaign targeting Ukraine's energy grid during winter.

Water Supply Disruptions Across Kyiv

Furthermore, the entire Left Bank of Kyiv is currently without water, specifically affecting the:

  • Desnianskyi
  • Darnytskyi
  • Dniprovskyi districts

The Troieshchyna residential area is experiencing low water pressure, and reduced pressure also persists in the water networks of the:

  • Shevchenkivskyi
  • Solomianskyi
  • Holosiivskyi districts

In the Pecherskyi district, water is available only in isolated zones.

Kyiv is confronting its most severe energy situation in the four years since the full-scale invasion began. The power deficit has grown worse following the January 13th bombardment. Over 9,000 residents have utilized mobile resilience points set up by the State Emergency Service. Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that utility workers and energy crews are laboring to restore heat, water, and electricity to Kyiv's homes.

The situation in Kyiv underscores the profound challenges communities face during wartime, particularly regarding energy and water security.

Restoring critical infrastructure after such attacks is vital for the city's basic functioning and for maintaining the morale of its inhabitants. The city administration continues to implement measures to swiftly address the consequences of the attacks, demonstrating a constant state of readiness to respond to such crises.
