Kyiv Government Approves 1 Billion UAH Investment for Backup Crossings Over the Dnipro River

Київська влада виділила 1 мільярд гривень на нові переправи через Дніпро.

Kyiv's Strategy for New River Crossings

The Kyiv city administration is set to allocate 1 billion hryvnias for constructing combined water crossings over the Dnipro River, along with developing access roads. This initiative has received official approval from the government, which has recommended the city secure the necessary funding. The military command will determine the exact locations for these structures, with final authorization resting with the Kyiv City Military Administration.

Strengthening Bridge Defenses and Exploring Alternatives

Amid intensified Russian shelling, Kyiv's Defense Council convened to discuss measures for protecting the city's bridges. Experts from relevant municipal agencies are working on advanced technical solutions to safeguard the bridges spanning the Dnipro. Starting October 3, construction will begin on several backup crossings, with plans also under consideration for an underwater tunnel beneath the river.

Minister of Restoration, Infrastructure, and Transport of Ukraine, Mykola Kalashnyk, stated that building embankments with pontoon crossings could take up to three months. These installations are designed to handle at least half the traffic capacity of the existing bridges.

On October 27, a nighttime attack damaged Kyiv’s Southern Bridge and the metro's surface infrastructure, forcing a temporary shutdown of vehicle traffic in both directions on the bridge. Restrictions were also imposed on the metro’s red and green lines.

Earlier, on October 1, two drones struck near a key support of the Southern Bridge, disrupting metro and surface transport services. The following night, another assault caused damage to the bridge’s support structures, safety barriers, and metro concrete barriers. A fourth drone attack targeted the same bridge on October 2.

Given the ongoing threats to Kyiv's vital transportation links, the pressure on the capital’s bridges remains acute. The approved project for new river crossings represents a crucial step toward maintaining the city's transport infrastructure.

In the context of persistent security risks, developing additional water crossings is essential not only to guarantee uninterrupted connectivity but also to mitigate the impact of potential damage to existing bridges. Successfully completing this project will significantly enhance Kyiv's logistical resilience amid wartime challenges.

In light of recent attacks on Kyiv's bridges, the city is prioritizing the restoration and reinforcement of critical infrastructure. This includes not only the ongoing repairs to the Northern Bridge but also plans for additional backup crossings to ensure the safety and mobility of residents.
