An Appeal for Environmental Responsibility Ahead of Memorial Days
Ahead of the traditional memorial days, Kyiv's Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation has urged the city's residents to consider the environmental impact of their commemorations. The core issue is the vast quantity of artificial flowers and wreaths typically brought to cemeteries. Most of this ritual paraphernalia is made from plastic, metal, and synthetic materials, rendering it non-recyclable and creating a significant waste problem. This call for change reflects a growing global awareness of how everyday practices, including memorial traditions, contribute to plastic pollution.
When exposed to sun and rain, these plastic decorations degrade, breaking down into microplastics that seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater. Furthermore, the accumulated waste from cemeteries is either sent to landfills or incinerated, releasing dangerous pollutants into the air. Lightweight components from wreaths are often scattered by the wind into green spaces and water bodies, posing a direct threat to wildlife and birds.
Recommended Eco-Friendly Alternatives
In response, the Department, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, is promoting several sustainable alternatives. Their recommendations include:
- Using fresh, living flowers,
- Planting perennial plants or decorative shrubs at gravesites,
- Creating compositions from natural materials like dried flowers or pine needles, completely free of plastic elements.
For several years now, the Church has also been appealing to the faithful to refrain from bringing artificial flowers to graves, emphasizing the spiritual duty of environmental stewardship.
This official appeal is part of a broader initiative to raise ecological awareness among the public. In the context of global climate change and pervasive issues like plastic pollution, it is crucial for every citizen to understand their personal environmental footprint. Opting for eco-friendly alternatives can significantly reduce the negative impact associated with burial and memorial practices, while also helping to conserve natural resources for future generations.
