Kyiv Braces for Hot Water Supply Crisis
Oleh Popenko, an expert in housing and communal services, forecasts that Kyiv will be left without hot water during the summer of 2024. He warns that the centralized hot water supply system in the capital will reach a critical state due to damaged infrastructure and the urgent need for repairs. The hot water shutdowns are expected to begin as early as April, immediately following the end of the heating season.
Damaged Power Plants and City-Wide Impact
Popenko pointed out that the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant (TPP) is not operational, TPP-5 has sustained serious damage, and TPP-6 will be unable to meet the entire city's needs. This infrastructure damage is a direct consequence of the ongoing war. For context, he noted that other major Ukrainian cities like Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih have been without centralized hot water for years, while Zaporizhzhia officially abandoned the system several years ago.
'Forget the term "hot water" in Kyiv this summer; install a water heater,' stated Oleh Popenko.
He further added that hot water will become a privilege for the wealthy, while residents of ordinary buildings will gradually forget the concept. Consequently, the capital is preparing for a difficult summer season marked by the absence of a reliable hot water supply.
This situation underscores the critical need to restore infrastructure devastated by the war and the urgency of implementing measures to ensure basic utilities. The lack of hot water could significantly impact the quality of life for Kyiv's residents, demanding immediate action from local authorities and the national government to address this pressing issue.
