Critical Power Shortage Forces Kyiv Metro to Halt All Operations

Нестача електроенергії змушує столичне метро припинити свою діяльність.

Kyiv Metro Grinds to a Halt Amid Severe Power Crisis

All subway and escalator operations in Kyiv have been suspended due to a critically low voltage supply from external power sources. The capital's underground rail system has ceased passenger transport, with trains halted on every line. Escalators have also been deactivated, severely restricting access to stations.

Kyiv has experienced emergency power cuts, creating further disruptions for residents. At the time of the metro shutdown, 253 apartment buildings were left without heating. City authorities confirmed that underground metro stations can currently function as shelters using backup power systems.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that metro operations were halted specifically due to critically low voltage in the network.

With severe frosts forecast for parts of Ukraine on January 31st, the strain on the city's heating supply is expected to intensify significantly. Authorities have promised to provide further updates regarding the restoration of metro service.

Ukraine's Ongoing Energy Crisis

The metro shutdown in Kyiv is a symptom of a broader energy crisis affecting not only the capital but other Ukrainian regions as well. These emergency blackouts pose severe challenges to urban infrastructure and daily life, particularly during the winter cold. This situation underscores the critical importance of a stable energy grid for maintaining essential public transport and municipal services. The crisis is part of the wider impact on civilian infrastructure from the ongoing conflict.
