Mapping Out Charging Station Locations in Kyiv

The Ukrainian capital is actively surveying 6,500 potential sites for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, designed to support an estimated 13,000 EVs. This effort is part of building a comprehensive charging network to accommodate the rising number of electric cars in Kyiv and across Ukraine.

Kyiv City State Administration Deputy Head for Self-Governance Powers, Kostiantyn Usov, commented:

We are currently collecting and processing data on existing capacities, connection possibilities, and other technical specifications needed to identify the most suitable locations for charging stations.

Growing Interest in Electric Transport

During the first four months of 2026, roughly 8,500 electric cars were registered in Ukraine. This indicates increasing interest in electric transport, even though demand for EVs dropped by 48% compared to April 2025. However, registrations in April 2026 rose by 49% compared to March 2026, suggesting a possible resurgence in this segment.

Since January 1, 2026, the reinstatement of a 20% VAT on imported EVs may also boost new registrations. To develop the charging network, the municipal enterprise 'Kyivtransparkservice' is sending inquiries to electrical grid operators, including DTEK.

Rights to use locations for installing charging stations will be awarded through open auctions on the 'Prozorro.Sales' system. The city continues to advance its EV infrastructure, which could improve environmental conditions and reduce reliance on traditional fuels.

Kyiv's charging infrastructure expansion reflects a growing need to support electric mobility while decreasing dependence on fossil fuels. Successful implementation could not only increase the number of EVs on the road but also enhance the city's environmental quality. Additionally, the reinstated VAT on EV imports strengthens economic incentives for consumers, potentially driving further demand for electric transport.

As Kyiv expands its charging station network, the surge in electric vehicle registrations is noteworthy. In April, sales of electric cars saw a remarkable increase of 49%, despite the reintroduction of VAT on imports. This trend highlights the growing acceptance and demand for electric vehicles in the region, making the timely establishment of charging infrastructure even more critical.
