Kyiv Transport Fare Increase Sparks Financial Concerns
Kyiv City Council member Andriy Vitrenko has released calculations showing that raising the public transport fare to 30 hryvnias per trip will cost a family of three an extra 34,848 hryvnias annually. The new fare is scheduled to take effect on July 15, 2026. Vitrenko is demanding an audit of municipal enterprises and a reform of the transport network before any price increase is implemented.
Financial Burden on Families
According to the published data, the proposed fare hike would raise the cost of a single trip from the current 8 hryvnias to 30 hryvnias. For a family of three—two adults and one child—using public transport twice daily over 22 working days per month, current monthly expenses amount to 1,056 hryvnias. Under the new fare, monthly costs would jump to 3,960 hryvnias. This represents an additional monthly burden of +2,904 hryvnias, or +34,848 hryvnias per year.

A petition against the fare increase has already been posted on the Kyiv City Council website, gathering 6,000 signatures. Vitrenko noted that
“for many Ukrainian families, this extra 35,000 hryvnias per year could cover several months of utility bills, children's extracurricular activities, essential medications, or part of their rent.”
Furthermore, after the fare change, Kyiv's monthly pass would rank fourth among European capitals, surpassing only those in London, Amsterdam, and Stockholm in cost. Vitrenko stresses the need to first implement transport network reforms before proceeding with any fare increases.
